The French touch

How Paris put a filter on house

In 1994 one of the founders of a young French label came out with “We give a French Touch to house Music”. Three years later an album recorded in a bedroom was called Homework. This chapter is about one gesture: quoting a record you love, and bending it.

Context first

This one opens without an account, and it is read before the lessons.

Three cities dancing, and Paris listening inDisco in New York, house in Chicago, techno in Detroit: dance music is born in America, passes through England and reaches France, where it has a bad name. All that’s left is a bedroom and some cheap machines.8 min

The lessons in this path

  1. 1The French touch, or how Paris put a filter on houseThe French touch invented nothing: disco came from New York, house from Chicago. Paris added a touch, records cut up and run through a filter, and the nerve to say so in English, on the back of a jacket.9 min

How these lessons are written

Each lesson starts from a brief and from period sources: Wikisource, Gallica, Persée, archives and museum websites. A fact that cannot be tied to one of them does not get written. The sources are listed under each lesson, linked directly.

The rhythm

A lesson takes five minutes, four questions at the end, then a review the next day, at three days, seven, twenty-one and sixty. It is that spaced return that makes what you read stay. One a day is enough, and nothing stops you doing several.
